THE STUMP.

The stump is symbol for survival facing the wild wind of destruction we are blowing upon our planet and the dark future we are preparing for ourselves. From the 1960s' slogan "Change or Disappear", we must shift to another slogan: Adapt or Disappear. Indeed, according to James Lovelock, the father founder of Gaia Theory, even if we totally stopped spreading our CO2 emissions right now, it would still take the Earth 1000 years to get back to her own natural order. As to survive, we'll need to be hugely adaptative and for this, to be profoundly rooted into BEING in us which is Reality's INFINITE essence. This is the meaning I give here to the word stump.

Usually we are captivated by our thoughts which pretend being who we are. They make us run in all directions like beheaded chickens, inducing us to believe the thought-stream running under our skulls is utterly important. Yet, when we watch our thoughts, instread of being carried away by them, we realize they are just a babbling, often repetitive, to which we identify. And the truth is when we return to BEING or Reality in us, we are much more present and able to adapt to the constant unfolding of Reality than when we are identified with our thoughts, caught up in our past or some hypothetical future.

The question is, can we experience the one in us that experiences and watches everything including our thoughts ? The experiencer in us is a pure consciousness which offers its INFINITE vacuum for the whole universe to occur and unfold, and this includes us and our thoughts.

Sunyata, शून्यता, is the Buddhist word for this conscious no-thing that is Reality's essence. In order to accomplish the return to this conscious void which is the ISness to everything, we must return to the Present Instant. There we stop loading new Karma and start unloading the old one. The problem is since we are identified with our thoughts which exist only in Time, we have difficulty remaining at the tip of the always renewed Present Instant where Time doesn't exist. Yet, the difficulty is not to return to who we ARE in Reality, which is BEING in us. No, the difficulty is to be who we are not by identifying with our thoughts. Indeed, our thoughts' limits enclose us just like a bird in a cage.

As to free ourselves, comfortably sitting on our meditation mat, let's flood our inner body with consciousness. If we find it difficult it is sometimes easier in the beginning to focus our attention on our breathing. Indeed, conscious breathing is always a powerful tool for embracing the Present Instant, and this because breathing follows the constant renewal of Reality's presence. Reality is always in the new.

In my time the instructors who taught me the return to BEING in us, had name: Alan Watts, Roshi Shunryu Suzuki or Javad Nurbakhsh. Strangely enough one among my best teachers for returning to Reality was Arthur Janov, my therapist, who was not after spirituality at all but was so uncompromisingly after Reality that he could only get there.

Today a new generation of instructors has emerged. They have name, Patti Quintero, Steve Hagen, Eckhart Tolle, Jon Kabat-Zinn, Thich Nhàt Hanh, etc. They are all very impressive teachers and as much skilled as the ancient ones. They come from different horizons and have different stories but they all serve the same boss: Reality's INFINITE essence, call it God, Sunyata, Brahma, the Tao, Wakan Tanka or whatever you like.

Today the masses live identified with their thoughts and they are encouraged doing so by the consumer society and its utterly powerful propaganda that keeps them enslaved to the surface of things. This identification creates the virtuality of Time and expells people from the Present Instant which nonetheless is the sole spot on the stream of Time that is one with Reality's conscious and INFINITE essence.

The 21st century will be spiritual or won't be at all, said André Malraux, but let's not mistake spirituality with religion. Today religions are, likewise secular ideologies, also based upon identification with thoughts and are therefore disconnected from Reality. We can say that religions are materialist enterprises that aim at power and have absolutely nothing spiritual. At worst they are deadly weapons for power and at best they serve as a traquilizing drug.

Humankind is on its tracks for destroying itself at a planetary scale. The fight for power at all levels, starting within the individual, then among the family, between different groups, nations and ideologies, all that aggravates the situation. BEING in us, which is INFINITY itself, is in profound PEACE and we need this PEACE to allow the Web of Life's order to regulate Biosphere
