SPIRITUALITY IS DIFFERENT FROM RELIGION


 "The 21st century will be religious or it will not be at all”. These words of warning have traditionally been attributed to André Malraux, French writer and Minister of Culture during the latter years of General De Gaulle’s government. Yet when we see how religions can be destrutive of life I think we shoud better use the word "spirituality" instead of "religion". So, let's put it this way: The 21st century will be spiritual or will not be at all. This fits better Reality.
A religion is a set of rules, rituals and saint stories which represent a thought-system that keeps us identified with our thoughts because it speaks to the thinker in us through the words of its book. In this it is not different from any other thought-system, could it be social, cultural, political, scientific, philosophical or just trivial. Yet a human BEING is BEING expressed into a human shape. And BEING is infinite Consciousness in essence.

The spiritual awakening is awakening from the identification with thought and all the thought-systems that thought creates, including religious ones. Spirituality is to stop identifying with thought. It is the return to what we actually ARE, which is BEING in us.

We must realize how easy it is for people to become trapped in the cognitive and conceptual prison of the identification with thought. This is a disease shared by most people on this planet. A disease which disconnects us from Reality's infinite essence or BEING in us, and induces us to hurt and destroy Reality's expression in us and all around us.

We could say that the artificial condition into which Humankind is locked up is:  Lost in Thoughts. This is through this disease that we destroy our own children and that we destroy the whole of Nature.  And religion since it keeps us into thought and speaks to the thinker in us, doesn't cure us from this disease and therefore doesn't serve its own purpose.

So, maybe what André Malraux meant was spirituality instead of religion. The 21st century will be spiritual, will bring us back to BEING in us, or will not be at all. And this because identified with our thought we cannot avoid destroying the World and, as I see today, we are on good tracks for this global destruction.

Identification with thought is like a cognitive screen that takes place between us and our Real self first, and then between us and the others, and eventualy between us and the whole of Nature. It makes of us Aliens which are destroying the planet.

Spirituality is the return to BEING in us or to who we really ARE inside us. It  reintegrates us into Nature and inscribes us again into the universe as its cosmic child.
